Thank you for applying to the Fatemarked Facility on behalf of your chosen character. Please answer the following questions, which will allow us to determine whether they are suitable candidates. Be honest and thorough.
1. Character Name: Seraphina Mirandir
2. Canon/Series: Original Character
Seraphina and her brother, Kyle, had been orphaned at a young age, but thanks to the generosity of the Lurencian Lord, Kyle became a knight and Seraphina joined the Rangers. But with the fall of the independent city, the Timinorian Empire gained control of all the major trade routes on the northern continent. The rule of the empire was harsh, and few dared stand against its army, led by the brilliant, young, general Shango. The rangers, those who walk in the shadows, were soon the only ones who dared defy the Empire. Jonaed, Seraphina’s mentor, a charismatic and skilled ranger, sparked a rebellion, inspiring the people to join together and fight back. But Shango managed to lead the rangers into a trap and Jonaed, along with the majority of the company, was killed. Seraphina fled, returning to the shadows until she could heal and rejoin the rebel forces who had retreated to the neighboring kingdom of Valkinor. Electected the leader of the Rebellion after her return, Seraphina must learn how to lead or risk losing everything.
3. Age: 21
4. Species: Human
5. Role: Sentinel
6. Why do you think your character is a good candidate for the Fatemarked setting?
Seraphina is no stranger to protecting people, in fact it is part of a Ranger’s job to guide travellers through rough terrain. She is also accustomed to working against oppressive organizations. In addition, she has the necessary skills to be a good sentinel. She adjusts quickly, learns quickly and acts quickly when needed. Her leadership abilities, if forced to develop them, might make her a future candidate for teaching and moving against the Trust.
7. What skills does your character have which might make them a good Sentinel?
Rangers are very mysterious. They can move through the forests, unseen and unheard. They can sense malevolence and danger but cannot always pick out the source of those feelings. Rangers are amazing tacticians when it comes to moving small forces and their intel is valuable for moving larger forces. They excel at infiltration and would make excellent assassins if they weren’t morally opposed to it. They are skilled hunters and trackers. They serve no one, but tend to help their homeland in times of trouble, whether the trouble comes from within or outside their borders. Seraphina is skilled with double daggers and is a dead shot with a bow. With a bit of training, she could become skilled with a sniper rifle as well as a pistol.
8. What traits, abilities, or qualities does your character have which might be the reason they are Fatemarked? N/A
9. How do you think your character will react to their new role in life?
At first, Seraphina will be unhappy and resistant to the idea of being in this new place, but she will acknowledge that there is a need for the job she has been selected for. In a way, being at the Double-F will mean that she doesn't have to deal with her problems at home, yet will enable her to use her skills for a cause that she isn't a leader of.
10. What are some of your character's strengths?
Seraphina is agile and smart, so she learns quickly. Her training as a ranger makes her well suited to the life of an assassin and guardian. She has a sense of loyalty to her profession, guiding people through difficult terrain and fighting for the freedom of her nation. Being a quick study, she picks up new skills with relative ease.
11. What are some of your character's weaknesses?
She fears putting the lives of others at risk, so she has a tendency to do things on her own and rarely asks for help, even if she needs it. She doesn’t like admitting that she is wrong either, and doesn’t have much of a flight instinct, being quite stubborn. She has a fiery personality and will not suffer fools for long. Sometimes this gets her into trouble.
12. Does your character have any health problems we should know about?
Due to watching her entire company be slaughtered, Seraphina fears losing the people she cares about and so she tries to avoid relationships.
13. Describe a single important event in your character's history.
Excerpt from Shadowwalkers Book 1:
Seraphina stormed into her tent, her cheeks flushed red with anger. She tossed her cloak onto her cot as she passed and dropped into a chair covered with a pale wool blanket. She looked at the sword in her hands for a moment before dumping it unceremoniously onto the ground next her. She blew out the breath she had been holding and crossed her arms. She sat there, fuming silently, her anger building with the memory of the sneaking smirks that the council members had exchanged when they thought she wasn’t looking. She sighed loudly and shook herself, glaring at the sword on the ground. Then she stood up, grabbed a knife and plunged it into one of the wooden posts holding the stretched material of her tent. Something rustled behind her. She spun around, releasing another small knife as Zeron pushed aside the tent flap. He yelped, falling back as the knife whizzed past his face and buried itself into another of the posts.
“What was that for?” he asked, looking slightly dazed.
Seraphina clapped her hand over her mouth, “Sorry,” she said, drawing the word out in a squeaky voice. “I’m just a little angry, that’s all.” She slumped back down into the chair again.
“I’d hate to see you when you’re really angry,” he said, walking over to sit on the cot. He gently picked up her cloak and hung it on a hook before sitting down. “So, what has made the newly appointed Rebel Leader so angry?” He asked, hunching over to set his elbows on his knees. Seraphina just groaned and shook her head. Zeron tipped his head, “The men seem happy about it. What? You don’t think that you’re qualified?”
Seraphina sat back and crossed her arms, “It has little to do with my leadership abilities and more to do with the council.”
“I’m not sure I follow,” he replied.
She narrowed her eyes and tucked her chin to cover her throat like a cornered wolf. “Their reasons are flawed,” she hissed, “They didn’t elect me because of my abilities or standing among the ranks. They chose me because they think they can influence and control me.” She took a breath and shot him a look that he hoped wouldn’t kill him, “That is what has made the Rebel Leader so angry.”
“I can understand that,” he said nodding, “But I also know that they have no hope of controlling you if you don’t want to be controlled.”
“I don’t know how to lead people, Zeron. I don’t know how to move armies, plan attacks or gain loyalties. They’ve trapped me in a position that I’m not prepared for. The men trust me, but I’m scared.” her voice fell to a whisper, “I don’t want their blood on my hands.”
“There are other people that you can rely on who aren’t on the council,” Zeron said, trying to reassure her, “Your senior officers are very knowledgeable. I’m sure that they will offer their support in the coming days.”
“Then the question becomes: Are they loyal to me or to the council?” Seraphina said, “I can’t have them second guessing me or worrying about split loyalties, or having them hesitate in the midst of battle.”
“Ask them then,” Zeron replied, “Ask them to swear their loyalty to you.”
“I can’t,” She said softly, “I’m too inexperienced. How can I ask that of them?”
“Well,” Zeron said, scratching his head, “You were just elected as head of the Rebellion, I’d think it would be normal for the leader to ask such a thing of them.”
14. Who is your character's next-of-kin? Kyle Mirandir, a knight in the Lurencian cavalry.
15. Tell us about the most important relationship your character has.
Seraphina’s most important relationship is Zeron. Currently a wanted criminal in several cities, there is a nice price on his head. He was born in a well to do merchant’s house and never lacked for anything, but his love wasn’t for business and he spent a lot of his time avoiding his mother and his duties by hanging out in the lower city. He fell in with what his mother would call “a bad crowd” and found a thrill in stealing from others without being caught, until he was caught. His father bailed him out, but kicked him out of the house, effectively disowning him. But Zeron proved himself to be very adaptable, using his education and street smarts to get by. He became better and better at stealing and soon he was pulling major jobs. But his tendency to gloat often got him into trouble and he spends as much time running as he does stealing.
At first, Seraphina finds him to be an annoying and inconvenient distraction, but soon she begins to rely on his advice and finds that she enjoys having him around. Eventually this develops into a lasting and loving relationship. His devotion restores the strength and confidence that she lost after Jonaed’s death.
16. What else should we know about your character that might recommend them to the position?
Seraphina is a fighter and strives to do what is right, but as a rebel she is not opposed to breaking the “official laws” in order to actually do what is right.
17. What is your character's Fatemark? N/A
